MILF rebels attack 2 Lanao Norte towns
ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews/18 August) — Members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) today occupied for close to eight hours the towns of Kauswagan and Kolambugan in Lanao del Norte, triggering a massive evacuation of civilians to Maigo and Linamon towns and Iligan City.
Reports said the MILF occupied barangays Libertad, Lapayan and Napo of Kauswagan.
SPO2 Romeo Villacencio of Kauswagan alleged that in Lapayan, the rebels fired at, looted and burned some houses, and killed nine persons.

By 11 a.m., five bodies were transported from a funeral parlor in Kauswagan to Iligan city.
Five civilians injured in the attack were brought to the city hospital.
Former Lanao del Norte provincial councilor Chick Rizalda said that in Kolambugan the office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Sarimanok and the Holy Cross School in Kolambugan were burned. The rebels also fired at two vehicles, looted stores, fired at motorcycle drivers, and occupied the elementary school and the port, Rizalda added.

Reports reaching radio station dxDB in Malaybalay city said Fr. Reggie Quijano, parish priest of Kolambugan, could not go out of his convent due to the presence of the MILF. However, it was not clear whether the rebels were holding him hostage. But as of 1:53 p.m., Iligan City Bishop Elenito Galido sent an SMS saying "the MILF starts to withdraw. Fr. Reggie is safe. Thanks to God."
Galido also denied reports that among the hostages or casualties were priests, nuns and other church workers. But he admitted they "hid for safety.”
Meanwhile, President Arroyo condemned the attack not only as a violation of the ceasefire agreement between the government and the MILF but also as a challenge to the aspirations for peace and progress in Mindanao.
"Because of this sneaky and treacherous attack, as your commander-in-chief, I have ordered the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to defend every inch of Philippine territory against MILF forces, and immediately restore peace in the affected areas in Lanao de Norte.
"We will not tolerate — I will crush any attempt to disturb peace and development in Mindanao," she declared.
The President also said she was convening an emergency meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) this afternoon "to assess the situation in Lanao del Norte and other areas in Mindanao, and come up with concrete, firm and decisive action to defend the peace-loving people of Mindanao."
The attack came a day after suspected MILF rebels ambushed a military convoy in Barangay Ilian, Molundo, Lanao del Sur killing seven soldiers and wounding eight others. In an article posted on its website www.luwaran.com, the MILF said the ambush was carried out by "still unidentified men."
Brigadier General Hilario Atendido, chief of Joint Task Force Tabak, said the rebels withdrew at about noon.
He said the military could not enter the areas occupied by the rebels, as the latter reportedly used civilians as hostages.
Rep. Vicente Belmonte of the 1st District of Lanao del Norte condemned the attack.
He said the attack and the bombings of two hotels here on Sunday could be related to the abortive signing of the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain between the government and the MILF.
The MOA would have been signed on August 5 in Putrajaya, Malaysia had the Supreme Court not issued a temporary restraining order the day before the scheduled signing.
Belmonte said he was planning to file a resolution seeking an amendment to the MOA but that he would now work for the scrapping of the proposed agreement.
Lanao del Norte Governor Khalid Dimaporo also spoke on radio station DXLS to condemn the attack.
